Managers of Tomorrow - Made in Berlin

On their way to becoming the managers of tomorrow, ESMT Full-time MBA students are being challenged to learn how to lead responsibly, especially in light of the current financial crisis. In a four-part documentary “Managers of Tomorrow – Made in Berlin”, Deutsche Welle (DW) journalists Wolf Gebhardt and Michael Wetzel accompanied four MBA students through their day-to-day experiences in and out of the classroom.

As a part of the DW-TV program MADE IN GERMANY, the documentary began airing weekly around the globe on Tuesday, July 28. The four episodes give insights into the ESMT experience in Berlin and how these future managers are learning to deal with today’s challenges.

The final episode aired on Tuesday 18 August 09.

In these times of crisis, there is a call for a new type of manager. Reporters Wolf Gebhardt and Michael Wetzel of Deutsche Welle TV have followed four Full-time MBA students from ESMT to learn how they are learning to lead for tomorrow. Episode 1 of the four-part series introduces the four students and shows them in and out of the classroom--with ESMT President Lars-Hendrik Röller and René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom.

Following from last week, join Laura, Paul, Larissa, and Stephan on the road to become tomorrows leaders. In this episode Stephan runs the Berlin marathon as well keeping up with his classmates, while Larissa is on campus welcoming German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the ESMT. Back in the class room, all four students are put to the test as they run through business simulations using the MARGA program at the ESMT.

In Episode 3 of "Managers of Tomorrow," we accompany Laura to Berlin's Carnival of Cultures during some rare leisure time. For Laura from Argentina, the annual event represents what she likes best about Berlin: a big city multicultural atmosphere. After a day off, it's back to work. At the ESMT students are also assigned to a psychologist, who analyzes their individual strengths and weaknesses. Laura, for example, learns how to assert her interests better. The students also take a field trip - to India. Their goal is to figure out the secret of success of the sub-continent's rising economy.

In part four, the students take a trip to India. After having arrived, they are confronted with extremes: on the one hand with stark poverty, and on the other hand with the splendor of globally successful companies.
At the same time in Berlin, the control committee is holding a meeting. For Lars-Hendrik Röller, President of the ESMT, this means: to demonstrate the school's performance. For our four students it is time to strike an interim balance.

 StephanSwinkelsStephan Swinkels

As a practicing lawyer, Stephan Swinkels, decided it was time to do and learn something new. Before joining the MBA Class of 2009, Stephan worked for a year as a freelance journalist and continues to contribute to the Financial Times as a MBA diarist throughout his studies at ESMT. With eight years of work experience in the legal sector, the Dutch citizen was specialized corporate law and governance before moving to Berlin with his wife and children. Stephan is an avid marathon runner.

 larissakryuchkovaLarissa Kryuchkova

The Russian student Larissa Kryuchkova gained many years of work experience in sales and business development in the electronic component and electricity distribution fields before deciding to do her MBA at ESMT. Larissa has work experience in risk management, business planning and market analysis. She describes herself as creative and target-oriented. Larissa is fluent in Russian, German and English and enjoys active hobbies like diving, snowboarding and cycling in her free time.

 LauraNovalLaura Noval

Laura Noval is one of the youngest Full-time MBA students at ESMT. Born and raised in Argentina, Laura has four years of work experience in the service industry and consumer goods area. The Spanish native speaker is fluent in five other languages, something that has proven extremely useful in her extensive international work experience. Laura is highly interested in the training and development of people. As an enthusiastic dancer, she has won awards including Argentina’s 1st Award on Belly Dancing National Contest.

 PaulSoblikPaul Soblick

Paul Soblik is one of three German students in the international MBA class. Paul has gained work experience in the fields of hospitality and hotel real estate consulting and has lived in the U.S. and various parts of Europe. He is a passionate and experienced team worker, who is ready to lead if the team needs him. Committed to continuous learning, he is well-organized and motivated. He is not only a fervent athlete, but also a passionate traveler to South America.
