Review of Climate Lunch June 29, 2010

Concepts for the Mobility of the Future

For the second time ESMT welcomed representatives from industry, politics and conservation organisations to the climate lunch series. This time with the title "Concepts for the Mobility of the Future. Opportunities and Limits of Electro Mobility."

First Christoph Burger (ESMT), Regine Günther (WWF) and Dr. Ben Möbius (BDI) gave short introductions covering their individual perspectives. Christoph Burger stated that Germany is cutting-edge when it comes to making combustion engines more efficient but lags behind in bringing to market alternative technologies and pushing modal split. This modal split is only efficiently done today in Karlsruhe (integration of streetcars and railway) and Ulm (the public car sharing concept Car2go gets private cars out of Ulm). Regine Günther emphasized that - to hit the target of reducing global warming about two degrees Celsius - by 2050, 80% of private cars must be hybrid; electro cars and most of commercial transport should by then be done by train. Form her point of view, Germany is in danger of missing out when it comes to green competition.

Dr. Ben Möbius observed that Germany is already market leader in climate protection technologies. He also argued in favor of a global emission trading.

One thing has become perfectly clear during presentations and the following discussion: all concepts have to be integrated to effectively protect our climate.

Please note that the presentations are in German.
