On April 14, 2011, ESMT’s first Girls’ Day was attended by 13 students from schools in Berlin and Brandenburg. The girls between 14 to 18 years came to ESMT to gain insight into the professional life of a professor and a program manager at an international business school. The Girls’ Day is a national day of action to motivate girls and women to pursue a career in natural and technical science.
ESMT organized a 4-hours program which started with a guided tour of the ESMT building. Afterwards ESMT professionals Rajshri Jayaraman, Associate Professor, and Katharina Lange, Head of Practice Group Life Sciences Industries, gave a presentation. They explained how they achieved their jobs and described their daily work life.
Emphasizing that hard work will be worthwhile, they encouraged the girls to give their best in whatever they are doing and to handle a situation no matter how hard it is. Furthermore, Rajshri Jayaraman and Katharina Lange discussed the fears and difficulties of the girls to make decisions about their future stressing that it is important to be well-informed and that fear will always prevent one from acting reasonably.
At the end of the day the girls made very positive statements in an anonymous survey about the event such us “I found the day very useful because I learned a lot more about working life”, “I feel motivated to start working”, and “The Girls’ Day at ESMT has been a top event”.
