ESMT Coaching Colloquia
Each year the CLDR organizes an advanced professional development and research event for the top global leadership coaches, academics, and HR professionals - the ESMT Coaching Colloquium. Participation in the colloquium is based on submission of competitive papers and case-studies in which experienced coaches and HR professionals discuss difficult or unusual coaching situations and share their ways of handling those. Peer consultations allow the coaches to look at alternative ways of handling their difficult cases and provide a fruitful platform for discussion, learning, and identification of research issues. The event is also one of the rare opportunities for advanced professionals and thinkers to find a supportive, but challenging, environment for stretching and expanding current understanding of coaching practice and research.

Tricky coaching: Dealing with difficult cases in leadership coaching
December 11 & 12, 2009
ESMT Campus, Berlin, Germany
- More than 50 expert coaches, scholars, and practitioners engaged in peer consultation
- Importance of leadership development in all areas highlighted throughout two-day conference
ESMT's Center for Leadership Development Research held its 1st Coaching Colloquium “Tricky Coaching: Dealing with Difficult Cases in Leadership Coaching” on December 11-12, 2009. The ESMT Coaching Colloquium brought together 50 leading executive coaches from Europe, Asia, and the Americas; researchers in the fields of Organizational Behavior, Leadership, and Careers from such institutions as ESMT, INSEAD, HEC Paris, and Harvard Business School; and practitioners from various global companies, including E.ON, Cathay Pacific, Ernst & Young, and SAP.
The atypical conference focused on difficult cases in leadership coaching. Participants engaged in writing case studies based on challenges in their leadership coaching work, as well as commenting on cases prepared by other participants. In line with ESMT’s mission of bridging theory and praxis, scholarly presentations by Zhike Lei (ESMT), Konstantin Korotov (ESMT), Laura Guillen-Ramo (INSEAD), and Colin Fisher (Harvard Business School) brought important findings from current Organizational Behavior and Leadership research to the attention of coaching practitioners from the areas of human resources, organizational development, and leadership development.
"This colloquium uniquely brought together research from faculty and real-world cases from participants and rapidly created a learning environment of reflection, trust, and engagement," said Graham Barkus, Head of Organization Development, Cathay Pacific Airlines. "As a result, program participants gained true insight with practical application to their real business issues and challenges."
Manfred Kets de Vries, Distinguished Professor at ESMT and the Raoul de Vitry d'Avancourt Chaired Clinical Professor of Leadership Development at INSEAD, underlined the importance of coaches getting engaged in reflection on their own practice. ESMT Prof. Konstantin Korotov accentuated the importance of research on coaching practices as part of the ESMT's effort on studying leadership development in modern organizations.
The convenors of the 1st Coaching Colloquium: Prof. Konstantin Korotov, Andreas Bernhardt, Kate McCourt, Manfred Kets de Vries, Elizabeth Florent-Treacy, Laura Guillen-Ram.
