Niels Billou

Assistant Professor

Niels Billou is an assistant professor at ESMT. He holds an Honours BA and MBA (distinction) from the Richard Ivey School of Business in Canada, where he was an award-winning faculty member. Niels received his doctoral training at London Business School, where he was the only PhD candidate to win the Outstanding Contribution Award.

Niels has designed and delivered courses on entrepreneurship, strategy, and marketing to students and executives across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. He has also written numerous cases and teaching notes in the areas of entrepreneurship, strategy, and business ethics.

His research interests include the growth of start-up ventures, entrepreneurship in emerging markets, social entrepreneurship, and the effect of institutional context on firm performance. Niels recently conducted a multi-country study of IT firms in Europe and the Middle East and is currently conducting a study on innovative business models at the base of the economic pyramid. His work has been published and presented at numerous prestigious international conferences.

Niels consults to both public and private organizations; past clients have been in the telecommunications, information technology, financial services, government, and not-for-profit sectors.

Prior to joining academia, Niels worked in the consumer packaged goods industry with Procter and Gamble, the hotel industry with Canadian Pacific Hotels, and the telecommunications industry with Bell Canada.
