Monika HamoriProfessor of Human Resource Management
IE Business School, Madrid
IE Business School, Madrid
At Wharton she worked with Peter Capelli and has published articles in the Harvard Business Review with her mentor most notably "The New Road to the Top". The route to the top is not as long or as winding as might be expected. "If you are a senior executive today, the path to the top is much shorter, because you would probably have had fewer jobs; there are fewer stops on the way. This finding is very consistent with the fact that corporate hierarchies are flatter than they used to be. So you probably spend a little less time in each job that you would have in 1980," says Hamori.
While many commentators advocate a passage to the top via a number of different companies, picking up experience on the way, as the best career strategy today, Hamori's findings appear to contradict this.
Few academics combine Hamori's appetite for "proper" research with such interesting, behaviour-changing conclusions.
