SumUp: Innovation in Mobile Point-of-Sale
Started in 2012, SumUp is now the leading mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) company in Europe. The SumUp card terminal in combination with its app allows small merchants to accept credit and debit cards, using their smartphones or tablets, in a simple, secure, and cost-effective way. The company vision is to become the first ever global card acceptance brand. Today, tens of thousands of merchants accept card payments with SumUp in 15 countries including Germany, Brazil, and the United States.
One year after finishing their full-time MBA at ESMT, Dimitri Gugunava, Clément Luton, and Tomer Sabag joined the SumUp startup story. Before getting to know each other during their MBA studies, Dimitri had worked in his home country, Georgia, as the managing director of his own company, a retailer of products for the building construction and automotive sectors. With a background in IT and telecoms, Clément had led finance and business intelligence projects for AXA Group Solutions in France. Tomer had been responsible for research and development projects at Nokia Siemens Networks in Israel.
Space Shack: Innovation in Startup Incubation
Space Shack offers entrepreneurs and teams at all levels a suite of flexible and fixed options for event, networking, and working spaces in addition to affordable business services. By focusing on infrastructure and background business tasks, Space Shack’s creative co-working space allows entrepreneurs and teams to focus on their number one priorities.
The company was founded by two ESMT full-time MBA alumni, Niels Madsen and Daria Markova, together with a third managing director, Maksim Aizikovitch. Space Shack’s 3,500-square-meter space in Berlin-Schöneberg is provided by the Pühringer Group in cooperation with ESMT Berlin.

3WM: Innovation in Virtual Reality
3WM Labs is a Berlin-based tech startup providing cutting edge, fully immersive, and engaging Virtual Reality (VR) experiences. The company uses diverse technologies to create elegant and effective VR solutions for business that can be deployed across different platforms.
3WM Labs was founded by Jacopo Gottlieb, Shantanu Roy, and Alejandro Salazar—three ESMT Berlin alumni of the MBA class of 2015. Their VR program for ESMT includes virtual lectures, 360-degree videos of the campus, and a city tour through Berlin that allows prospective students to explore campus life virtually.

JetEight: Innovation in Business Travel
JetEight is revolutionizing the short-haul business class market. With all-you-can-fly subscriptions beginning in mid-2017, JetEight will soon represent a smarter alternative to traditional air travel—faster, more affordable, and time-saving for business executives. The company will service routes between Berlin, Frankfurt, and Zurich with small private jets and is seeking members and investors for global expansion.
The startup was founded by two students of the Master’s in Management at ESMT Berlin, Lisa Makarova and Ruben Portz. The company has already garnered the attention of travel sector media, with features in The Frequent Traveler, Aviation Telegraph, and Aviation Week.
