Learning and unlearning from the Israeli entrepreneurship experience

In this lecture based on the book “Israelism” and on over 20 years of consulting, Dr. Etay Shilony provides insights into what organizations, managers, and leaders can adapt from the Israeli entrepreneurship spirit, in additon to what is needed to establish success. Dr. Shilony explains how innovative oriented organizational cultures combined with systematic management are essential for sustained growth.   

A large body of research has shown that startups are better off combining innovation and ingenuity with "management systems". These include careful planning of: strategy, partnerships, resources, products, marketing and sales, human capital needs etc.

Israeli organizational culture and management are based on three major pillars:

1. Lack of belief in structure, thus glorifying intuition, improvisation, and instant gratification.

2. Due to a variety of historical reasons plus the military being the womb for many Israeli entrepreneurs, Israelis developed a belief in the importance of power in dealing with problem solving.

3. As part of Israeli upbringing, many Israelis believe that they are part of a "chosen people", thus resulting in arrogance, low tolerance for acceptance of criticism, and resisting outside influence etc.

These cultural characteristics explain why Israelis shine as entrepreneurs, but less so as managers of enterprises. The author suggests a shift from cutting corners to creativity, from power to strength, and from arrogance to empathy.

About the speaker

Dr. Etay Shilony is the Founder and CEO of S2R Strategy2Results. S2R specializes in strategic, organizational, and management consultations. Etay has over 20 years of consulting experience and has served as a consultant to prominent Israeli organizations from a wide variety of fields. In the latter context, Etay worked with Israeli companies that are active abroad. His experience in management dates back to the late 1980's and early 1990's, when he served as general director of a chain of clinics in Boston. Upon his return to Israel in 1993 he established and directed the Miriam and Sheldon Adelson Clinic at the Sorasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv.

Dr. Etay Shilony has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Boston University and has held faculty appointments at Boston University and Harvard Medical School. Over the past 17 years he has served as an adjunct lecturer at the Arison School of Business at the Interdisciplinary Center of Herzliya, teaching courses in the MBA and MA programs. He also writes a column in the leading Israeli business magazine, The Marker. Israelism is his fourth book.
