Jan U. Hagen
Jan Hagen is an associate professor at ESMT. Jan’s research and teaching focus is on leadership. He is particularly interested to understand how teams and organizations deal with errors. Apart from journal articles he published the book Confronting Mistakes – Lessons from the Aviation Industry when Dealing with Error (Palgrave Macmillan) in 2013 and edited How Could This Happen – Managing Errors in Organizations (Palgrave Macmillan) in 2018. His research received media coverage in outlets like the BBC, The Economist, Financial Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, The Guardian, Forbes, Handelsblatt, Harvard Business Manager, Irish Times, Manager Magazin, Spiegel Online, and Sunday Times.
Jan is the program director for ESMT’s Leadership under Pressure executive program. He is also teaching specifically on error management in courses at Cass Business School, IDC Herzliya, Saint Paul Business School, and Singapore Management University.
His executive education portfolio includes programs for, among others, Allianz, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, DZ BANK, EnBW, ERSTE Group, European Central Bank, European Investment Bank, German Federal Armed Forces, IBM, Lufthansa, Moscow Stock Exchange, Pius Hospital, Vienna Insurance Group, etc.
Jan is the founder of ESMT’s biennial Error Management Conference that is now conducted in cooperation with Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management. In addition to his academic work, he also supported companies as a consultant.
