Art and Economics in the Age of the Internet
Today, everybody’s life is permeated by images, captured by an endless array of automated and manual cameras. Events and non-events are recorded from a myriad of angles by a tireless network of drones, satellites, close-circuit cameras, and photographers. The economy of images, as well as the infinite array of documents uploaded to the web, offer unprecedented opportunities to reveal the workings of our world. But how do we navigate across this vast ocean of imagery and data? How can we give form to our discoveries? And how are our works recycled and reformulated in the fast-flowing currents of networked media?
In this lecture, Mishka Henner and Jonathan Lewis presented and reflected on their own strategies of appropriation, aggregation, and accelerated economies as ways to engage with all of the above, followed by a group discussion.

About the speakers
Mishka Henner (born 1976) is a key practitioner among the generation of artists redefining the role of photography in the internet age. His process often involves extensive documentary research combined with the meticulous construction of imagery from materials sourced online.
Henner holds a Masters degree from Goldsmiths College in London and in 2013, was awarded the Infinity Award for Art by the International Center of Photography. He was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in the same year and in 2014, was on the shortlist for the Prix Pictet. Henner's works are in numerous public collections including the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Tate Collection of Artists' Books.
Jonathan Lewis (born 1970) lives and works in New Jersey, USA. He makes photo-based art that explores themes of production and consumption via the elemental properties of the pixel and the low-fi aesthetic of the screen-grab.
His work was included in 'Signs of a Struggle: Photography in the Wake of Postmodernism' at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK in 2011, and in 2016 his Pixles series, based on Beatles album covers, was included in the exhibition 'Sight Reading: Photography and the Legible World' at the Morgan Library and Museum, New York.
Lewis's work is held in a number of public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK; Société Française de Photographie, Paris, France; BESart Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal; George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester, New York, USA. He is represented by Benrubi Gallery in New York, USA.
David Evans is a writer and curator based in Berlin. He is the author of the catalogue raisonné John Heartfield: AIZ/VI 1930-38 and a Research Fellow in Photography at the Arts Institute, Bournemouth, England. Recent books include Appropriation (The Whitechapel Gallery and The MIT Press, 2009), László Moholy-Nagy: 60 Fotos (Errata Editions, 2011) and Critical Dictionary (Black Dog Publishing, 2011) and The Art of Walking (Black Dog Publishing, 2013). He is a regular contributor to Elephant Art Magazine (UK), Source Photography Magazine (IR), Afterimage (USA) and Eye magazine (UK).
