What Happens When the Internet is Everywhere

In this Open Lecture, Lee Rainie speaks about the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) will bring major change to people’s lives. Benefits include increased safety and convenience, greater self-knowledge, and extra leisure as smart agents take on more work. Challenges include less privacy, elimination of jobs, more social division, less human agency as algorithms rule things, a proliferation of abuses and cybercrimes, and an inability by humans and institutions to adjust to all the changes quickly enough. Lee Rainie, director of the Washington, DC-based Pew Research Center’s internet and technology department, presented findings from numerous studies he has led on the social implications of the IoT and public attitudes towards an increasingly technological future.
